"Many years ago, there was a beautiful island where Leprechauns lived.” So begins the new children’s book “Saint Patrick” by author-illustrator Richard Ward. Each lovingly-illustrated page tells the tale of Ireland’s legendary Saint Patrick and the mythical leprechauns.
Leprechauns, “Saint Patrick” explains, are very tiny magical people with pots of gold. It is the magic of the little creatures that makes Ireland wonderfully beautiful—its browns, greens and golds. Ireland has mean-eyed, scaly skin snakes around the farms to kill and eat the mice, and keep them out of the grains and potatoes. They are so good at their job that there are almost no more mice left. The hungry serpents begin to feed on the clueless leprechauns instead. With the leprechauns’ lives in danger, the King summons Patrick, a blonde young man blessed to talk to animals. Will he be able to stop the mean-eyed snakes from robbing Ireland of its beauty?
“Saint Patrick” was created from a fictitious story about Saint Patrick told to kindergarten class by Ward. In this gentle story of good triumphing against evil, Ward also explains the traditional Irish folklore of wearing green (and the affectionate pinch when not donning anything green) on St. Patrick’s Day. With vibrant illustrations complementing the texts, “Saint Patrick” is an amazingly good read for the little ones.
