Winners Announced After the Record Breaking 1.6 Million Tweet Nominations for The 4th Annual Shorty Awards Ceremony

Co-hosted by Samantha Bee (@iamsambee) and Jason Jones (@jonesinforjason) from “The Daily Show”, The 4th Annual Shorty Awards honored the best of Twitter, Facebook, Foursquare, YouTube, Tumblr, Quora and rest of the social web live last night at The TimesCenter in New York City along with celebrities, industry professionals, and guests in attendance, and to a global audience via The New Livestream, capturing all of the nights events.

The Shorty Awards were created by Sawhorse Media’s Gregory Galant (@gregory) and Lee Semel (@semel). “This past year has taught the world that what happens on the social web can impact culture and society as much as what happens in a movie, newspaper, album, book or play,” said Gregory Galant,CEO of Sawhorse Media, who co-founded the Shorty Awards along with Lee Semel, CTO of Sawhorse Media. “We're proud to have built an award ceremony that rivals those in other mediums to shine a spotlight on the personalities and companies that excel on these new platforms.”

The show kicked off with welcomes from Anderson Cooper (@andersoncooper) and Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan), with the always hilarious Gregory Brothers (@gregorybrothers) treating the The Shorty Awards audience with a special live performance. Keeping the audience laughing, Tracy Morgan (@realtracymorgan) was featured in an exclusive video short made for the ceremony. Mayor Michael Bloomberg (@MikeBloomberg) also accepted an award presented by Foursquare co-founder and CEO Dennis Crowley (@dens).

Awards were presented by Tiffani Thiessen (@TAThiessen), Chef Roblé (@ChefRoble), Miss USA Alyssa Campanella (@MissUSA), Miss Teen USA Danielle Doty (@MissTeenUSA), Aasif Mandvi (@aasif), Charlie Todd (@charlietodd), Mike Bettes (@TWCMikeBettes), and Don Tapscott (@dtapscott). Ricky Gervais (@rickygervais) made a video appearance during the event and was awarded this year’s Lifetime Achievement Shorty Award. Foursquare founder Dennis Crowley (@dens), Tumblr founder David Karp (@davidkarp), and Quora founder Charlie Cheever (@ccheever) were also in attendance as guest presenters who honored the top users of their platforms.

Emily Rahimi & Commissioner Cassano (@FDNY) received the #LifeSavingHero Award (Presented by The @WeatherChannel), with Andy Gabrielson (@FindTheTornado) winning the #Weather Award (Presented by The @WeatherChannel). Stephanie Schierholr received the Best Social Media Manager Industry Award (Presented by @Spredfast) for SpaceTweeps for Stephanie Schierholz!, produced by NASA (@NASA), and Instagram (@Instagram) received a Shorty Award in the #Apps category (Presented by @PepsiCo). Andy Carvin (@acarvin) won a Shorty Award in the #Journalist (Presented by @MuckRack) category.
