Affordable Care Act Helps Auto Repair Shop Lower Costs

The Affordable Care Act led to a six percent decrease in the health insurance costs for British American Auto Care, a Columbia, Maryland auto repair shop.

Speaking at a Capitol Hill press conference commemorating the second anniversary of the Affordable Care Act, Brian England, the President of British American Auto Care, shared how the health care reform law led to a six percent reduction in health insurance costs for his auto repair shop. The press conference, hosted by Democratic Leader, Nancy Pelosi; Democratic Whip, Steny Hoyer; and Assistant Democratic Leader, James E. Clyburn, highlighted working families and small businesses that have benefited from the act.

“We are committed to offering health insurance to our employees, but over the past ten years it has become a real struggle,” Brian noted while speaking at the press conference.

With his daughter, Sandi Weaver, the general manager of British American Auto Care, and his almost two-year-old grandson, Lucas Weaver, at his side, Brian went on to explain that when the Affordable Care Act became law two years ago, he and his wife Jennifer were expecting their auto shop’s health insurance rates to increase twenty to thirty percent. This would have resulted in up to $20,000 in extra expenses. Instead, they were surprised to see their costs decrease by six percent. This decrease helped them avoid having to choose between two difficult options: increasing the labor rate they charge their customers or decreasing the coverage they offer to their employees.

In addition to the insurance cost decrease, British American Auto Care employees were able to get the added benefit of preventive care with no co-payment.

“It’s great that both our employees and our customers benefited from the health care reform law,” Brian later added.

British American Auto Care is committed to offering high quality automotive services. They feel that in order to do this, they need to hire, train, and retain excellent employees. Being able to offer a good employment package that includes health insurance goes a long way toward helping them to achieve that goal. As a result, Brian is fighting to help keep the Affordable Care Act in place. He feels it is essential in helping his family’s business to continue to offer high quality car repairs and services to their customers at a reasonable price.
