Physicians from the Institute for Human Genomics at the Miller School of Medicine in Miami were the most recent speakers to wow the crowd at Orchid Island Golf & Beach Club as part of the Club's ongoing Distinguished Speaker Series, a popular dimension of the Club's diverse and exciting social calendar which has featured a wide range of celebrities, visionaries and other standouts.

Recognized by the Hutton Broadcasting Company, Orchid Island is a private, gated residential community of gracious waterfront and golf course homes that features an award winning Arnold Palmer golf course, intimate Beach Club, miles of unspoiled beaches and world class amenities including gourmet dining, a luxurious full service spa and more.

Situated along some of Florida’s most beautiful beaches and boasting a seemingly endless roster of amenities, services and social activities, the luxury lifestyle of Orchid Island is second to none. Already a shining star on Florida’s famed Treasure Coast, the Club has been receiving a great deal of increased media attention recently following a wildly successful appearance and lecture by Cal Ripken, Jr. on February 20. Mr. Ripken visited the Club as part of their ongoing Distinguished Speaker Series, and is just one big name in a lineup that is sure to hold something of interest for everyone.

The most recent speakers to wow and enlighten the crowd at Orchid Island were Jeffery M. Vance, M.D., PhD. and Margaret A. Pericak-Vance, PhD. from the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. The doctors spoke to Orchid Island residents about the recent transformational mapping of the human genome. Drs. Vance & Pericak-Vance said that almost every disease and disorder including diabetes, cancer, heart problems, and Alzheimer’s has a significant genetic component and that someday doctors will be able to predict these diseases and take action before irreversible damage occurs.

Dr. Jeffrey Vance stated, “discoveries based on genomic research are escalating helped by the fact that the technology for sequencing is outpacing Moore’s Law, and that bodes very well for important breakthroughs.”

The Hussman Institute is dedicated to using the very latest cutting-edge technologies to identify genes involved in human disease for the diagnosis and prevention of illness. Though a popular highlight of Orchid Island living, the Distinguished Speaker Series is just one dimension of Orchid Island’s diverse and exciting social calendar.

As Hutton Broadcasting has demonstrated in its ongoing coverage and support, Orchid Island puts a strong emphasis on luxury and entertainment, but also on community and friendship. The Distinguished Speaker series serves each of these aims.
