We are excited about the efficiencies to our billing department, and the overall improvement in timely charge submissions our department will capitalize on while using PatientKeeper.
WALTHAM, MA (PRWEB) March 28, 2012
PatientKeeper® Inc., the leading provider of physician healthcare information systems, today announced that two practice plans within UBMD, the physicians group for the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the State University of New York at Buffalo, have selected PatientKeeper Charge Capture™ software to improve revenue cycle management and streamline professional fee charge capture for their physicians.
PatientKeeper Charge Capture software provides an automated billing workflow that easily fits a clinician's work style, and can support ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes. The software offers flexible access on PCs with a Web browser and popular handheld devices.
UBMD’s Internal Medicine department, Academic Medicine Services (AMS), will transition from paper-based physician charge capture to PatientKeeper for recording physicians’ inpatient charges at Erie County Medical Center and Kaleida Health’s Buffalo General Hospital. AMS is the largest practice plan within UBMD, employing approximately 140 physicians across eight sub-specialties.
Concurrently, UBMD’s Department of Pediatrics, University at Buffalo Pediatric Associates (UPA), will upgrade and expand its existing PatientKeeper deployment. Other practice plans within UBMD also are evaluating PatientKeeper.
UBMD includes 18 individual practice plans comprising more than 450 physicians who are also professors at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. They have private practices throughout Western New York, and also practice at affiliated institutions including Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC), Buffalo VA Medical Center, Roswell Park Cancer Institute and the Catholic Health System.
“We are excited about the efficiencies to our billing department, and the overall improvement in timely charge submissions our department will capitalize on while using PatientKeeper,” said Francine Spinella, Clinical Systems Director at UBMD Internal Medicine. “We anticipate PatientKeeper will change how we utilize our secretarial staff. Until now, there have been a lot of manual processes – unit secretaries logging physicians’ paper time slips in spreadsheets, checking back with providers to clarify charges, then going back to the billing department. Our goal is to remove the middleman and have our billing department and providers work together collaboratively.”
Physicians at UBMD will have the option of using PatientKeeper from a web portal or mobile devices, such as Apple® iPhones® and iPads®. “We expect over time about three-quarters of our physicians will use handheld devices to enter their charges to improve timely filing,” Spinella said. “Our providers keep up with modern technology and many already use these devices for other purposes, so it should be comfortable for them.”
Due to the current deployment at UBMD’s Department of Pediatrics, PatientKeeper already is integrated with UBMD’s back-end billing system, GE Centricity Group Management.
“We are delighted that UBMD has elected to extend its use of PatientKeeper to its Internal Medicine department, and expand the deployment within pediatrics,” said Paul Brient, president and CEO of PatientKeeper. “It’s a testimony to the power and effectiveness of our charge capture solution that the group is considering further expansion to additional physician practice plans and affiliated hospitals in the UBMD network.”
