Splitting our SharePoint database would have been a nightmare. Then we found StoragePoint. It was the magic bullet that got us to where we needed to be.

Metalogix Software, the trusted provider of content lifecycle management solutions for Microsoft® SharePoint®, Exchange® and Cloud platforms, today announced The Walsh Group implemented Metalogix StoragePoint versus out-of-the-box tools for SharePoint storage optimization. The Walsh Group leverages a full suite of Metalogix SharePoint solutions to successfully manage its rapidly expanding SharePoint 2010 deployment.

For over 100 years, The Walsh Group has practiced general building construction since being founded in 1898 by Matthew Myles Walsh. The Walsh Group and its subsidiary Archer Western Contractors are global leaders in the building, civil and transportation sectors. The company has invested more than $450 million in capital equipment and employs more than 5,000 engineers and skilled tradesmen.

The Walsh Group faced an upgrade to SharePoint 2010 but found hypergrowth in content databases were significantly impacting performance. To solve their SharePoint performance issues and allow them to successfully upgrade and store content, the company turned to Metalogix StoragePoint to offload unstructured content known as Binary Large Objects (BLOBs) from the underlying SQL database. The company had initially investigated out-of-the-box options but found they would be forced to split their SharePoint database, which they were opposed to because of the increased costs.

“Splitting our SharePoint database would have been a nightmare,” said Pat Wirtz, Manager of Technology Innovation, The Walsh Group. “Then we found StoragePoint. It was the magic bullet that got us to where we needed to be. We got away from the huge SQL database that no one wanted to manage and we were able to externalize those BLOBs. That saved us a huge headache from managing the SQL database as well as the backups. It also eliminated the amount of overhead it would have taken to manage two separate databases.”

Because the Walsh Group uses an extensive number of AutoCAD and 3D modeling files, the growth of content had exploded in the database and the SharePoint storage issues were a business-critical concern. After implementing StoragePoint, The Walsh Group was able to minimize the size of its SQL database from nearly 300GB down to roughly 30GB while solving its performance issues and increasing end user productivity.

“Before StoragePoint, we were at that critical mass point,” said Wirtz. “We were getting errors and things were getting a little shaky. When we went with StoragePoint and upgraded, those errors were gone and the time it took to move the database was cut significantly. We were sold with Metalogix. Two months later, we bought the rest of their SharePoint suite.”

Today, The Walsh Group leverages a full suite of Metalogix content lifecycle management solutions – StoragePoint, Migration Manager for SharePoint, Migration Manager for SharePoint - Public Folder Edition and Selective Restore Manager. The company’s IT staff has been impressed with the intuitive user interfaces and flexibility and their environment is more robust than ever, supporting their employees’ collaboration needs and more.

“We are seeing many organizations, like The Walsh Group, that are dealing with storage and performance issues as the size of its SharePoint environment grows exponentially,” said Steven Murphy, CEO, Metalogix. “By utilizing Metalogix StoragePoint, the company was able to dramatically reduce the size of its content databases to optimize performance and reduce rising overhead costs. Our suite of high-performing, cost-effective solutions has allowed The Walsh Group to enhance the use and performance of its SharePoint platform investment.”
