With so many reports in the Press and Media highlighting the hygiene risks of door handles due to their high levels of contact in day to day usage Door Handles LTD has decided to give some useful tips on how to maintain them properly.
Door Handles can be a breeding ground for infections and bugs due to bacteria being passed from one person to another when they come into contact with the same surface area. Some of these things can be as simple as a person not washing their hands after using the toilet and then touching the door handle on their way out. Even if the next person using the toilet washes their hands, they will become infected if they come into contact with the door handle that the previous person touched. It’s that simple!
Many office environments are very aware of high risk areas such as door handles and take the necessary precautions of cleaning them regularly and installing hand sanitizers nearby but this can often be over looked in the home and it is important that they are cleaned and maintained in a regular basis.
Brass door handles are very easy to look after and maintain as they just need to be cleaned with a soft cloth and some warm water. Simply wipe around the surface area as often as you can. You will often find that even though most brass door handles have are made from different types of brass they have been coated with lacquer to protect them. A good tip is to use a wax polish which will help bring out their original shine and keep them looking like new for longer.
Chrome door handles are another easy type to clean. Again you can use a wax polish to bring them back to life to maintain their original state. It is advised to purchase a specialised cloth this type of surface. If you ask at your local supermarket you should be able to obtain them there or simply just use a soft cloth.
Stainless steel door handles are the most difficult to maintain as they can lose their shine very easily and things like fingerprints can show up very easily. It is advised to use soapy water when cleaning and dry with a clean cloth. After this has been done a very good trick is to use a baby wipe also to bring it back to life.
If you follow the guidelines above you will find that you will significantly reduce the level of bacterial infection in your office or household and you will be able to maintain your door handles for much longer.
