White Plains, NY (PRWEB) March 30, 2012
As the month draws to a close, we are pausing to reflect on our 10th year of incorporation. It’s been a great ride – the ups and the downs – and we feel like we’ve gained a little wisdom along the way.
In celebration of our big ten, here are the top ten lessons we’ve learned about thriving in the tumultuous world of branding.
1. It's all about Relationships.
Cherish them and handle them delicately. Happy clients, coworkers and even vendors are the backbone of your company. Do not take them for granted.
2. Don't Work with People you Dislike.
Life’s too short to work with a**holes, period.
3. Be Brave.
Sometimes doing the right thing for a client isn't easy. Have integrity in the work you do and challenge yourself and those you work with.
4. On the Flipside, Know When to Concede.
Right or wrong, sometimes clients are dealing with realities that supersede the previous ‘be brave’ rule. We often find it’s how you work around those challenges that result in the greatest successes.
5. It Takes a Village.
Seriously, it’s time to get over your ego. A successful business is dependent on a whole collection of people, roles and skills. There may be a figurehead in your business, but without proper support, it all comes to a screeching halt. Respect and reward the ‘doers’ that make your business possible. Give them freedom to thrive.
6. The Best Marketing is the Kind you Don't Pay For.
There is absolutely no substitute for unsolicited positive feedback. It’s credible, it’s engaging, and it’s free. We’ll take good press and a client referral any day of the week.
7. Do Your Homework.
This may seem like an obvious one, but you’d be surprised how often agencies don’t do the bare minimum before a client meeting. And by bare minimum, we mean the very basics - study their business, get to know competitors, walk the aisles, and most of all, have an opinion.
8. Practice Good Housekeeping.
Send contracts. Keep up to date on invoices. Have consulting agreements in place. You may not feel like you have time to deal with the details, but it’s the details that can make or break you.
9. You Can’t Win if You Don’t Play (AKA You Never Know)
Some of our most fruitful and rewarding partnerships started as situations we never thought would go anywhere. Think something’s a long shot? You’ll never know unless you try.
10. Work to Live.
Building a successful business is just peachy, but don’t forget what really matters in life. Enjoy your partner, kids, dogs, hobbies, and put work in the proper perspective.
