This group provides an opportunity to gain knowledge and insight from Spring practitioners with real world experience.

Two years ago, the Atlanta Spring User Group had their first meeting. The inaugural meeting was kicked off with a presentation from Keith Donald, best known in the Spring community for creating Spring Web Flow. With almost 40 members attending that first meeting, it set the tone for the Atlanta Spring User Group’s steady growth over the years. The Atlanta Spring User Group, commonly referred to as ASUG, currently has over 300 members.

Information Technology professionals know that it’s more important than ever to keep their skills current and sharp. Chandra Polaku, a member since ASUG’s early days, explains the importance of the group in the current job market, “Spring Framework has been gaining a lot of popularity. In this tough market, it is a must-have skill on your resume, especially if you have experience working with Java and its related technologies. I believe this group provides an opportunity to gain knowledge and insight from Spring practitioners with real world experience.”

ASUG is looking to expand beyond their current mission statement: “ASUG is the first user group created to support the growing Spring community in the Atlanta area.” Kate Clark, the organizer and founder of ASUG explains, “Our original focus was connecting Spring professionals in the Atlanta area but now we’re exploring ways to reach technologists on a national level. We’re currently networking with new Spring user groups that have started in other cities and working with VMware to come up with new ideas for engagement.”

Meetings have covered topics ranging from beginners’ guides to advanced demos given by the developers who created those Spring technologies themselves. eHire provides the meeting space, funding, pizza, and swag that is given away at each meeting. An average meeting hosts about 30 to 40 IT professionals who network and discuss technology before the presentation begins. Every presentation offers an in-depth look at a product or solution from the Spring family followed by Q&A and other open dialogue.

As eHire begins its fourth year and ASUG its third, exciting things are planned for both. ASUG hopes to announce new partnerships that will dramatically change the reach of the organization while eHire plans to announce it’s new consulting service, eHire Labs. eHire Labs provides expert technical services that create simple and elegant solutions for technical challenges by using the right combination of people, process and technology.

The Atlanta Spring User Group’s meetings are held on the last Tuesday of every other month with the next meeting being held on Tuesday May 22nd due to Memorial Day. Please join them at the eHire offices in Buckhead to learn more about Spring, as well as additional networking opportunities.
