10Rate reviewers and staff selected 10 of the ice makers for 2012, assigning each a numerical rating as well as awarding three models that stood out for quality, value, and budget. A wide variety of models were considered for this Ice Makers Top 10 list, from family to economy sized models, and testing was given based on the following set of seven criteria:
1. Produced ice quickly and efficiently
2. Were easy to install
3. Could be under the counter or freestanding
4. Had removable bins with ample ice storage
5. Stayed cold enough and were properly insulated
6. Didn’t have condensation or frost buildup
7. Ran relatively quietly
The annual Best Ice Maker awards list was headed by the Edgestar IB650SS Full Size Ice Maker, winning the Best Quality spot and a 9 out of 10 rating. The review noted several strengths of the ice machine as follows: “An efficient ice maker from EdgeStar, this undercounter model produces clear ice quickly, up to 65 pounds a day. The stainless steel front is topped by a black slide-up lid that lets you scoop out ice easily. The ice maker works either as a built-in or a freestanding unit. We were impressed by the LED controls and the ability to adjust the thickness of the bullet-shaped ice cubes.”
10rate's editors also gave the Best Value Ice Maker award to the EdgeStar IB450SS Under Counter Ice Maker. With a rating of 8 out of 10, the review boasted, “An ice maker that produces clear ice quickly and efficiently, this EdgeStar undercounter model runs for just $849 and makes up to 45 pounds of ice per day. The removable ice bin stores 25 pounds, and the computerized controls allow you to adjust the density of the ice cubes. The design is simple and attractive, with an elegantly curved stainless steel handle. The noise is not any noticeably louder than similar models. For the ice production and capacity it offers, this EdgeStar model is very reasonably priced.”
Additionally, the Best Budget award from the Top 10 Ice Makers Ratings 2012 list went to the EdgeStar IB120SS Under Counter Ice Maker for which 10rate noted, “A reversible stainless steel door with a handle bar, this ice maker from EdgeStar can be installed either under a counter or freestanding. No drain line is necessary, and the front ventilation system allows it to be built in easily. A nice feature of this ice maker is its automatic shut-off when the ice bin is full.”
Although EdgeStar racked up big with three awards in the Ice Machine Reviews, Orien also was listed for multiple models in the list. Though the brand was only listed once, the Danby DPC6012BLS Under Counter Ice Maker earned a respectable 8.5 out of 10 rating. In the second place spot, the review mentioned, “If you like keeping your wine bottles and beverage cans chilled and ready to serve, then you’ll appreciate this undercounter ice maker from Danby with compartments for 8 pounds of ice, 12 wine bottles, and 60 cans.
