With more than 3 million people estimated to be living with a chronic Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and not know it, it is more important than ever to raise awareness for how to prevent and treat the virus. MedEx Associates LLC, of Augusta, GA, is undertaking a new program to educate those infected with HCV and to help them live healthy, normal lives. In November, 2011 the FDA approved two new drugs, Merck’s Victrelis (boceprevir) and Vertex’s telaprevir, that allow a triple therapy Hepatitis C treatment that can actually cure the disease when managed correctly. MedEx has a dedicated program addressing these therapies and helping give Hepatitis C patients their lives back.

Hepatitis C is a virus spread through contact with the blood of an infected person. Lisa Kay Sullivan, Clinical Director for MedEx Associates wants to encourage screening for anyone falling into a high risk category. Sullivan states, “The first thing a patient infected with HCV should know is that the virus is not a death warrant.” If one suspects they may be exhibiting symptoms of HCV or are in a high risk category, they are encouraged to come into the clinic as soon as possible for a private screening. Seeking care quickly and early is the best way to prevent long lasting damage and to ensure the best results from treatment. Symptoms, often vague and mistaken for a lesser illness, include: fatigue, belly pain, joint pain, itchy skin, sore muscles, dark urine, jaundice (yellowing of skin and whites of eyes). High risk categories can include anyone that has participated in IV drug use, had a blood transfusion or organ transplant before 1992, has tattoos or body piercings, has had acupuncture with needles that may not have been properly sterilized, has undergone hemodialysis.

MedEx Associates LLC offers patient centered care backed by more than 70 years of experience helping patients throughout the Southeast, and their new HCV awareness program is an extension of their dedication to providing all patients with a full spectrum of care. With their cutting edge treatments and personalized patient plans, MedEx Associates LLC is ready to help patients overcome any obstacles on the road to wellness.
