The 2012 Relay For Life of Palm Harbor is scheduled to take place in mid-April at the Palm Harbor University High School, the same location where high school teacher Kevin Schachter will lead his “Future Business Leaders of America” student group in the Relay For Life of Palm Harbor event.

Kevin saw the Relay For Life of Palm Harbor event as an opportunity to teach leadership skills, event planning, organization skills, and the importance and impact of philanthropy to participating 9th-12th grade students. He instills the fact that it is important to give back to the community early on. The fact that the 2012 Relay For Life of Palm Harbor event is being held at their high school gives the group a unique chance to keep the fundraising local.

“At their age, they don’t realize how likely they are to be impacted by cancer, either directly or indirectly. The American Cancer Society educates their participants very well on the subject, and everyone can benefit from the knowledge they receive,” commented Schachter.

The students have already raised $400 by having a chocolate sale at school, almost half way to their goal of $850. They decided that 10% of all proceeds from various fundraising events will go to charity. Kevin and his students plan on having more fundraising events at school, to get more student groups involved, raise awareness and help fight cancer.

About Relay For Life:
Relay For Life is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event, and is driven by volunteers. Relay for Life began in 1985 when colorectal surgeon Dr. Gordon Klatt decided to raise money for the American Cancer Society in honor of his patients by walking around a track in a 24 hour period. Today, Relay For Life events are held in more than 5,000 communities spanning 21 countries and have raised an estimated over $3 billion. All proceeds go to funding cancer research with the aims of stomping out the disease. In addition to fundraising, the event also raises awareness of the disease and furthers the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, helping them get well, and by finding cures and fighting back.
