Lionel Leach, President of Communications Workers of America (CWA) Local 1039, today called on Steve Rothman to take down his negative attack ad in his campaign against Congressman Bill Pascrell. Rothman's ad accuses Pascrell of abandoning the public option. This follows a second news outlet's identification of the ad as false.
“Bill Pascrell was at the front of the line in the fight to include the public option in the Affordable Health Care Act, and he still is,” said Leach. “By his campaign’s own admission, Congressman Rothman ‘misspoke’ when he made his claim. I’ve always known Steve to be honorable, he should take down his false, negative ads.”
Following an article by Politickernj.com last week saying that Congressman Rothman’s claims that Congressman Pascrell abandoned the public health option “strained credulity”, Politifact yesterday rated statement that Pascrell voted “to remove the public option” with an outright “FALSE”.
Politifact noted that a Rothman spokesman said:
"Steve misspoke when he said that Pascrell voted against the public option. Steve meant to say that Pascrell opposed the public option.”
Politifact then noted:
According to the article, before and after the health care reform was enacted, Pascrell publicly expressed his support for a government-run health insurance plan.
In an August 2009 opinion piece, Pascrell wrote, "Health care reform without the public health insurance option would be a hollow one." An August 2010 article on PolitickerNJ.com quoted a Pascrell spokesman as saying the congressman "remains a supporter of the public option."
“Bill Pascrell was fighting for comprehensive health care legislation for all Americans and was at the forefront of the efforts to include the public option,” said Leach. “Any efforts to distort this fight are disingenuous and should not be tolerated. Congressman Rothman’s false, negative ads should be taken down immediately.”
