"At NWH our team is performing advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy & duodenal switch procedures that go beyond the benefits provided by traditional gastic bypass and banding procedures,"
Mt. Kisco, NY (PRWEB) April 02, 2012
Northern Westchester Hospital announced today that the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) has designated Northern Westchester Hospital a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence®. The program recognizes surgeons and facilities that demonstrate an unparalleled commitment and ability to consistently deliver safe, effective, evidence-based care. The program is structured to help bariatric surgery providers continuously improve care quality and patient safety.
“At Northern Westchester Hospital our team is performing advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures, including sleeve gastrectomy and duodenal switch procedures, that go beyond the benefits provided by traditional gastric bypass and banding procedures,” stated Dr. Mitchell Roslin, Director of Bariatric Surgery at Northern Westchester Hospital.
“Recent studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine showed that patients with Type 2 diabetes who had bariatric surgery were significantly more likely to lower blood sugar to normal levels than those treated with drugs, diet, and exercise,” added Dr. Roslin.
Individuals who are overweight or obese have increased health risks from hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, gallbladder disease, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, other respiratory problems, and certain cancers. Higher body weights are also associated with increased deaths in all-cause mortality (1). The successful, long-term management of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other comorbidities depends on a dedicated, multidisciplinary team working together with the patient and their family.
The Surgical Weightloss Program at Northern Westchester Hospital provides:
o Advanced minimally invasive surgical procedures
o Patient education and peer support
o Nutritional counseling services
o Medically monitored physical rehabilitation to help transition into more active lifestyles
o A commitment to long-term support

More than 262 million Americans are insured by health plans that recognize the BSCOE designation.
The ASMBS Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence program was created to advance the safety, efficacy and efficiency of bariatric and metabolic surgical care and enables patients to identify specific providers who have met the requirements for delivering high-quality perioperative and long-term follow-up care.
