I decided to take a different approach to getting things done and began investigating some of the great legislative achievements of the past. If they could get things done, then we can, too.

Dr. Joseph H. Boyett knows how to get things done in Washington, and his new book is presenting an alternative to the typical books about gridlock.

In “Getting Things Done in Washington” (published by iUniverse), established author and academic Dr. Joseph H. Boyett brings readers the human stories behind six legislative accomplishments. The book describes the major players, the tactics that led to success and the lessons we can learn from history about what it takes to make Washington work for all Americans.

“Like most progressives, indeed most Americans, I was frustrated with the gridlock I saw in Washington,” says Boyett. “I decided to take a different approach to getting things done and began investigating some of the great legislative achievements of the past. If they could get things done, then we can, too.”

Boyett’s unique perspective on political and governmental issues is based on his academic training in political science, university-level teaching and experience working in Washington. Boyett, who advised senior officials during the Carter Administration on implementing public policy, also has years of experience in the private sector. He assisted Fortune 500 companies including IBM, British Petroleum, Merck, EDS (now HP Enterprise Services), and Sara Lee to meet the challenges of operating profitably under difficult economic conditions and political environments.

“The positions I take in the book are a product of my life experiences,” he says. As the story of each struggle unfolds, Boyett pauses at critical moments to reflect on lessons to be learned. Expanding on these ideas, he provides the reader with five key strategies for pursuing accomplishment in Washington today.

“My book provides hope, but it also takes readers on a journey back in time,” says Boyett. “These great moments in our nation’s history show the 90 percent of the American public frustrated with Washington that we can get things done.”
