Translators without Borders, a U.S.-based charitable organization that facilitates the transfer of knowledge to those in need, is proud to announce its first Platinum Sponsor. Elanex, a leading global translation technology and services provider, has generously donated $10,000 to the organization to help in its efforts to fight language discrimination.
Translators without Borders strives to build a world where knowledge knows no borders. They are the world's leading non-profit organization dedicated to fighting language discrimination. The financial support provided by sponsors is critical to sustaining and growing the organization, particularly in under-resourced languages. "In the course of our work, we've become aware of a huge global need, which is for people in poor countries to be able to access global knowledge in their own language," explained Lori Thicke, co-founder of Translators without Borders.
“According to UNICEF more people die from lack of knowledge than from diseases,” she continued. “People in poor countries are simply unable to access global knowledge in a language they understand.”
The challenge that Translators without Borders undertakes is to build scalable solutions that bridge the language last mile, making global knowledge local and local knowledge global. The organization’s main activity is to connect the community of NGOs who need high-quality translations with professional vetted translators who volunteer their time to help. Additionally, in places where whole communities lack access to critical knowledge because there are no translators, Translators without Borders is helping to build local translation capacity. The organization is piloting its first Healthcare Translation Training Center in Nairobi this week.
“Our goal is to turn every language barrier into a bridge to knowledge, and sponsors like Elanex enable us to give back to these communities, an important role for a leader in the industry,” said Thicke.
“The Elanex team is delighted to partner with Translators without Borders as a Platinum sponsor,” said Donald Plumley, president and CEO of Elanex. He continued, “We were inspired by the words of David Packard who said, 'the company has a responsibility to contribute directly to the well-being of the communities in which its operates.’ We felt an obligation to find a way to connect our global translation resources with their heart, hope, and energy to the broader community. I could not be more proud of our team members who individually contributed to our matching gift program that enabled us to reach the Platinum threshold. We felt our sponsorship would be more meaningful if we all contributed together and the depth of participation is humbling. Beyond the monetary sponsorship, Elanex is providing volunteer reviewers to speed the certification of translators, large project resources, and intends to coordinate suitable events to raise awareness and additional donations for Translators without Borders.”
Lori Thicke adds: “We are incredibly grateful to Elanex for this assistance, which is critical to enable us, in turn, to support more humanitarian work around the globe. Translators without Borders is a 100% volunteer-driven organization, so we rely on sponsorships to support projects such as training African health workers to translate information critical to their communities. In particular, we are about to return to the Health Translation Operation in Kenya to work in the Kibera slum. The platinum sponsorship from Elanex enables us to provide more resources that promote better health through education.”
About Translators without Borders
The mission of Translators without Borders (and its sister organization in France, Traducteurs sans Frontières) is to translate knowledge for humanity. Translators without Borders has met that mission through quality humanitarian translations provided by a community of trained translators to vetted NGOs who focus on health, nutrition and education. On average, Translators without Borders volunteers translate millions of words per year, focusing on three types of humanitarian translations: crisis translations needed urgently to inform people in crisis, translations that support an NGO’s operations, and educational translations that directly support people in need.
