The Tennessee car accident attorneys at the law firm of Michael D. Ponce & Associates, whose Web site URL can be found at, hereby alert the public that April has been named National Distracted Driving Awareness Month by three federal agencies in hopes that bringing more awareness to this issue will help to reduce the number of car accidents across the country that are caused by distracted drivers.

The Tennessee auto accident attorneys at the law firm of Michael D. Ponce & Associates hereby alert the public that the federal government has, for the third consecutive year, announced that April has been named as National Distracted Driving Awareness Month. This effort is being made in hopes of bringing more awareness to the dangers of distracted driving and ultimately with the hope that this heightened awareness will lead to more people avoiding distractions while they are behind the wheel of a vehicle.

The effort to bring this awareness to the issue of distracted driving is being led by the Department of Transportation, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and the National Safety Council. In addition, different law enforcement agencies on state, county and local levels have announced that they would be making an effort to increase their scrutiny on distracted driving in hopes that increased priority on enforcement will prompt people to drive with more focus on the road.

According to statistics released by the three governmental agencies, more than 3,000 people have been killed in the United States in each of the past two years in crashes that were blamed on distracted driving. In addition, nearly 25 percent of all crashes in the United States occur because drivers are distracted by cell phones, according to the NSC. Finally, drivers who send and/or receive text messages increase the risk of being involved in a crash by a factor of anywhere between 8 and 23 times.

Within the state and according to the state government, more than 5,500 Tennessee car accidents occurred between the years of 2003 and 2010 where the use of a cell phone by at least one of the drivers involved in the crash was cited as a factor in the collision. In addition, the numbers on a per-year basis rose from 653 in 2008 to 894 in 2009 and finally to 918 in 2010. The Tennessee auto accident lawyers at Michael D. Ponce & Associates ask the public to exercise increased awareness of their focus on the road this month in hopes that they will identify potentially risky habits that can be changed.
