esd electronics introduces the CAN-USB/Micro, a CAN (Controller Area Network) gateway supporting the USB 2.0 full-speed interface with data rates up to 12 MBit/sec.

Controller Area Network (CAN) is a serial network technology that was originally designed for the automotive industry, especially for European cars, but has also become a popular bus in industrial automation as well as other applications. The CAN bus is primarily used in embedded systems, and as its name implies, is a network technology that provides fast communication among microcontrollers up to real-time requirements, eliminating the need for the much more expensive and complex technology of a Dual-Ported RAM.

The CAN-USB/Micro is a very small, low cost CAN-USB interface for PCs, that fits into a DSUB9 enclosure. The ARM Cortex-M3 micro controller controls the CAN data.

The non-isolated CAN interface is powered through the USB connection.

The CAN-USB/Micro supports the USB 2.0 full-speed interface with data rates up to 12 MBit/s. The serial line CAN interface (SLCAN) is used as the firmware interface.

A Windows driver (NTCAN-API), with the usage limited to one application at a time, is available for Windows XP/ Vista / 7 (32/64 Bit). A Windows driver with full-featured NTCAN-API support is available as an option.

For Linux operating systems the CAN-USB/Micro is fully supported by the SocketCAN project and the SLCAN device driver as part of recent Linux kernels.

The interface is fully conforming to ISO 11898-2, high speed, and it supports the maximum CAN baud rate of 1 MBit/sec.
