On February 27th, 2012 Zimmer Holdings Inc. reported a profitable year as its earnings quadrupled to $156.6 million in 2011 compared to 2010. In the last three months of 2011, $108 million were set aside by Zimmer in order to cover the costs of litigation.
The Durom Cup, manufactured by Zimmer Holdings, is an artificial hip component widely used in hip replacement surgeries in the US since 2006. Since 2006, the Durom cup has been implanted in approximately 12,000 patients, according to Drugwatch article published on April 3rd, 2012. In July 2008, the Zimmer Durom Cup hip replacement components were recalled after it was learned that the surgical parts did not work properly, forcing many patients to undergo painful and costly additional surgeries to correct the defect.
Several Zimmer Durom Cup lawsuits have been filed and on June 9th, 2010, the US Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation issued an order approving centralization of products liability cases involving the Durom Cup hip device in federal court in the District of New Jersey (MDL 2158). The MDL was assigned to the Honorable Susan D. Wigenton.
