Wikia, the collaborative media company that is home to some of the largest communities on the Web, is focusing its efforts on engagement and discovery for a mainstream audience. Today, the company launched new category Hub pages and unveiled a home page designed to help its 50 million monthly global visitors navigate the site’s 200,000 wikis ensuring that the best content and most popular topics are surfaced for discovery. The new Hub pages will curate content in three main categories - entertainment, video games and lifestyle - and will help make Wikia an even more compelling destination for those interested in collaboratively created content.
“Our new hubs and home page will amplify our communities’ voices by curating the best of our amazing wiki content, and the knowledgeable and passionate people who create it, for a broader audience,” said Wikia CEO Craig Palmer. “These efforts will make it easier for users to engage with Wikia content, giving advertisers greater opportunity to expand their connection with Wikia beyond individual wikis.”
The strategic direction to curate and surface content on the Hubs will create greater engagement and open up advertising opportunities to connect with a wider array of influential consumers.
The new hub design will intensify Wikia’s naturally strong community voice by curating and cultivating content, as well as facilitating innovative industry partnerships. The site’s new Hub pages offer a more visual representation of the best collaboratively created content for video games, entertainment and lifestyle into an editorial-like interface that general users should find familiar.
Programmed by Wikia, content found within each Hub is fueled by the community through promoted submissions and direct engagement with Wikia. The new home page design is changeable by users through a remix function that shuffles top content and introduces new wikis to explore. Both the new home and hub pages will feature current wiki stats, providing visitors with an immediate sense of what’s trending. Users will find top Wikia picks, popular videos with exclusive first-look content, and creator showcases.
Wikia represents a revolution in media and content. Its users and creators were recently profiled in an audience survey that suggests the motivations for participating in collaborative content range from knowledge seeking, to connecting with and belonging to relevant communities of interest. Nearly 80% of those surveyed suggested that they use Wikia as a source of knowledge and quality content. And nearly half say they communicate what they learn on Wikia with friends, family and online via social circles.
In recent months Wikia’s global traffic has reached over 50.1M unique visitors with over 882M page views. The site’s Video Game traffic topped 25.9M unique visitors, making it the number one global video game focused network on the Web. Wikia Entertainment is experiencing stellar momentum with 90% growth year-over-year to date with (22.1) unique global visitors and 254M page views in January 2011.
