While his passport may substantiate the on-paper Britishness of this Hampshire-born artist, his yarns and philosophies paint a picture of a grizzled American folk musician, decades of abandon behind him.

The latest album from British troubadour Jon Allen, entitled “Sweet Defeat,” will find its way to America on April 10th via the new indie label startup, OK!Good Records. “Sweet Defeat” was originally released in the UK in May of 2011 and now seeks further success across the pond. Impatient fans don’t have to wait for the official release date to hear the album, OK!Good Records has pre-released the album on their website (http://www.okgoodrecords.com), where it can be streamed for free or purchased in both physical CD and digital form. The US version of the album will also contain two bonus tracks: “Sarah,” featuring Mark Knopfler of the Dire Straits and “When the Morning Comes,” featuring fellow British singer/songwriter Amy Smith.
Sweet Defeat is Jon Allen’s sophomore effort, who found success early on when his song “Going Home” was featured in a 2008 UK advertisement for Land Rover. With the song a commercial success via tens of thousands of downloads, Allen’s critical acclaim continued to grow in England with rave reviews, an appearance on Later With Jools Holland and five singles playlisted on BBC Radio 2.
The Devon born, raspy voiced singer/songwriter will now make an impression in 2012 with the US release of his new album, Sweet Defeat. Produced by Tristan Longworth, Sweet Defeat is backed by the same raw emotional intensity that has become so distinctive of Jon Allen, frequently drawing comparisons to a young Rod Stewart. Showing an impressive air of confidence and maturity in his songwriting, the album tells about love in all stages – from the initial attraction and passion to heartbreak and loss of hope. Sweet Defeat seamlessly transitions from solo acoustic, finger picked songs to upbeat and instantly memorable band anthems.
With so much influence pulled from traditional American folk, blues and classic rock, American listeners will be hard pressed to detect any evidence of British origin in Jon Allen’s music, as indicated by BBC Music in a review of Sweat Defeat, "While his passport may substantiate the on-paper Britishness of this Hampshire-born artist, his yarns and philosophies paint a picture of a grizzled American folk musician, decades of abandon behind him."
