Williams Mullen is pleased to announce that Robert F. Redmond, Jr. received the Lewis F. Powell, Jr. Pro Bono Award from the Virginia State Bar on March 26, 2012. Each year since 1991, this award has been given to an attorney or attorney group who has made outstanding contributions in the field of pro bono service.

Mr. Redmond was selected for this recognition for his unwavering commitment to assisting immigrants with legal matters. In 2005, Mr. Redmond established a monthly legal clinic to assist with the specific legal needs of Hispanic immigrants. The clinic is now held twice a month, in conjunction with the Virginia Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and serves about 360 clients per year. Attorneys from Williams Mullen and other firms in the Firms in Service consortium provide legal assistance with help from law students from the University of Richmond, paralegals and legal secretaries. Williams Mullen has allotted office space in the Firm’s Richmond office to give the law students a place to work on immigration matters.

Mr. Redmond’s good works also spill over into the legislative area. He helped form the Virginia Employers for Sensible Immigration Policy, which works to ensure that legislation aimed at illegal immigration does not harm the state’s business reputation.

As stated by Catherine M. Marriott, chair of Williams Mullen’s Pro Bono Committee, "Bob embodies the ideal of the citizen lawyer.  His commitment to the immigration clinic, which he founded in 2005, and his clients has been unwavering.  Pro bono service is an ethical obligation of every attorney and Bob provides inspiration and leadership to all of us by going above and beyond in the provision of legal services for the underserved."

Mr. Redmond received the award at an event held in Petersburg, Virginia. Williams Mullen recognized this outstanding achievement at a private event at the firm’s Richmond office. Mr. Redmond is the first Williams Mullen attorney to receive this honor.
