The site's CEO, Ben Harvey, discusses the company's plans for future contests, the value of social media for exposure, and his new site re-design.

Patio Productions has big plans for future sweepstakes

We ended up getting so much more exposure than expected... and we got so much positive feedback that we’re definitely going to do something like this again.

Patio Productions, one of the largest online retailers of patio furniture, has successfully hosted its first sweepstakes and is already discussing new ideas for a future contest.

Throughout the month of February, the retailer and patio furniture manufacturer hosted a social media contest on the phenomenally popular Facebook platform wherein Facebook users could enter to win a free Fusion dining set, declared to be a $1299 value. The sweepstakes attracted over 1000 contestants, who were required to “Like” the Patio productions Facebook profile for entry.

“It was amazing how many people signed up for this, and how many people our contest reached,” says Ben Harvey, the CEO of Patio Productions.

“The goal was really for exposure; we started this contest as a way to get noticed, make some friends online, and give one lucky winner a really awesome piece of furniture. We ended up getting so much more exposure than expected, with so many users sharing our contest with their friends. It was just amazing, and we got so much positive feedback that we’re definitely going to do something like this again.”

When asked if future sweepstakes would have a similar format, Mr. Harvey was reluctant to divulge many details. “Well we are still doing lots of brainstorming on this topic. The Facebook contest was really awesome, but I don’t necessarily want to re-tread old territory. We’ll still use our Facebook page to announce all of our sales and future contests, of course, but for our next contest, I want to do something a little more interactive. More work for the entrants, but with a bigger potential reward.”

“Think along the lines of a scavenger hunt,” says Harvey, smiling.

Patio Productions will have many unique options to choose from when it comes to platforms for future contests, of course. Many businesses have in the past held contests on a number of popular social networking sites such as Myspace, Twitter, and Linkedin. And with the explosive popularity of the social bulletin board juggernaut Pinterest, many marketers and online contest organizers will have plenty of fertile new ground to experiment with.

“Pinterest is pretty interesting,” says Harvey, “and the image-centric format really opens up all sorts of creative avenues for user-generated content… we’ve certainly thought about it, but I don’t want to say too much or it will spoil the surprise!”
