Flight cancellations remained low for North American airlines in March

FlightStats, the undisputed leader in flight and airport information services, announces the release of the March 2012 Airline and Airport On-time Performance Report.

North American airlines, on average, delivered 76.77% of their flights to the arrival gate within 15 minutes of schedule in March, down a little over 3 percentage points from February but still seasonally high. Cancellations remained low at 1.18% and essentially unchanged from February's 1.17% of flights.

North America's top 10 performing airlines and their on-time arrival percentages in March were:

US Airways and Delta led the majors in March. United Airlines had widespread and persistent issues related to the final merging of United and Continental operations but managed to avoid unusually high levels of cancellations and excessive delays. American Airlines turned in a second month of solid on-time performance. Here's how the N. American major carriers on-time arrival percentages compared:

Smaller, regional European airlines turned in strong performances in March with Aegean and Naysa leading the way. 19 of the airlines we tracked delivered > 90% of their flights to the gate on time. The average OTP for the group was an exceptional 84.42% in March up markedly from February's 79.32%, and January's 82.82%.

The top ten on-time arrival performers among European carriers were:

India's SpiceJet and IndiGo airlines joined the usual Japanese airlines to capture the top 10 on-time performance positions in March. The average on-time performance rating among the 38 airlines we analyzed in March was 73.46%, up slightly from February's 72.2%, and from January's 69.99%.

Major US hubs JFK, ATL, and DFW joined Tokyo's Haneda and three other US airports among the top 10 performing large, global airports in March. Miami maintained a higher than normal level of performance with 79.38% of its flights departing on time. The average on-time departure performance among the top 30 airports in March was 75.31%, down slightly from February's 76.52%.

SLC, PDX and MSP outperformed their North American counterparts in March, with each managing over 87% on-time departures. The average on-time departure performance for the group in March was 80.63%, down from February's 84.89% and January's 82.49%.
