Supportive pledges via Kickstarter allow fans to name characters and receive other benefits. Unique funding mechanism bypasses traditional methods of funding a new book.

Mike Resnick (http://www.mikeresnick.com), one of science fiction’s most notable authors (and guest of honor at this year’s Worldcon) has teamed up with independent publisher Arc Manor/Phoenix Pick (http://www.PhoenixPick.com).to offer a unique project that gives readers various perks for their support.

The project, being run on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1679920887/sf-book-by-bestselling-hugo-nebula-winning-author?ref=email) , invites potential readers to contribute at different levels for various rewards, ranging from the ability to get the book 60 days in advance of its official release date (at a discounted price) to being able to name a major character in the book, having the book dedicated to a person of the contributor’s choice and enjoying a private dinner with the author (including round-trip airfare and hotel accommodations).

This project is a prime example of authors and newer publishers using cutting-edge technology to find backing for a major project by connecting directly with fans and investors, bypassing more traditional means of distribution and funding.

The novel itself is expected to be the first in a series set in a new universe, with various authors being invited to participate.

Kickstarter.com is a crowd-funding website for creative projects founded in 2008. It has funded endeavors ranging from indie films to technology-related projects. A number of projects funded through Kickstarter have garnered over a million dollars.

Mike Resnick is one of the most popular science fiction authors writing today. According to Locus Magazine he has won more awards for short stories than any other science fiction writer, alive or dead (and he’s fourth on the list for novels).

Phoenix Pick is the Science Fiction and Fantasy imprint of Arc Manor, a fast-growing independent publisher based in Maryland.. Authors published by Phoenix Pick include Mercedes Lackey, Mike Resnick, Kevin J. Anderson, Larry Niven, Robert Heinlein, Harry Turtledove and Robert Silverberg.
