The Foundation for Global Scholars today announced a $10,000 donation from STA Travel Inc. to open doors for more students to gain beneficial experiences abroad through the STA Travel Scholars Program.

The donation – to be awarded in $2,500 increments - is the fourth consecutive gift from STA Travel, a global travel specialist with 30 years experience helping students, teachers and young professionals travel the world.

“Once again, STA Travel is generously supporting the Foundation for Global Scholars’ efforts to create global citizens and leaders through cultural and academic experiences abroad,” said Nancy Kepner, executive director of the Westminster, Colo.-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. “Each dollar from STA Travel is meaningful to these student scholars who might otherwise not be able to go abroad, learn about the world, and better themselves in the process.”

In addition to the foundation’s “general eligibility” requirements, STA Travel Scholars must have an emphasis of study in: photography; film and art; travel and tourism; international business; international studies; or foreign language. Recipients also will be required during their time abroad to blog four times through the STA Travel Blog, contribute photographs for their blogs and STA Travel promotional use, and write a final report after they’ve returned home.

“The blogs of our STA Travel Scholars are proof of the personal impact of these international experiences supported by our donation,” said Kevin Jacobs, managing director at STA Travel. “We take great pride in seeing the world open up before these students. When they return home, they bring a deeper awareness of other cultures, people and places – knowledge that will serve them for the rest of their lives.”

Applicants to the STA Travel Scholars Program must submit, along with their application, a letter of reference from a professor with whom they have studied. The reference letter should address the most positive aspects, both personally and academically, that make the applicant a good candidate for study abroad.

Since its launch in 2006, the Foundation for Global Scholars has awarded scholarships to more than 900 students in the U.S. who have gone to more than 16 countries via a wide variety of international education programs. The Foundation seeks support through financial and other contributions from individuals and organizations that will ultimately benefit when hiring students with international education experiences, as well as entities that see the value of education abroad, both for their own goals and the world in general.
