Bootstrapped startup Explore.To yellow pages exits beta and introduces an innovative use of business photos from multiple sources on their places detail pages.

Explore.to doesn’t just use the business owner submitted images for a place, they also pull in geo tagged photos from Foursquare, (foursquare.com) Instagram (instagram.com) and Flickr (flickr.com).

A great example is Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, New York, http://go.explore.to/explorelisting. Compare this to a Google Places page http://g.co/maps/99ext and the value of user submitted photos from these popular photo sharing sources becomes apparent in making local search and business places pages much richer. People who have actually have been to these places provide the enrichment by proxy.

On their latest public release Explore.To uses the Klout (http://www.klout.com) API to score users who Tweet about the business and as a way of reviewers verifying their identity and subsequent influence, (Reach, amplification & network impact). Important metrics for business owners as well.

The Klout implementation on reviews is an exciting step forward in gauging the validity of the reviewer in a space which frankly needs cleaning up. Explore.To will rank reviews based on Klout score rather than the typical review site ranking on recency, (With no indication whether the review is real) however, over the coming months they will build out another trust scoring algorithm so as not to marginalize users who don't have a Twitter account or Klout score.

Explore.To is intent on being a compelling disruptor to both Yelp & Google Places by using the power of APIs, and mashing up geo content from multiple sources.
