Rap artist Alex recently released his mixtape “Simply Alex.” Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes presents the project, which is hosted by DJ Epps. It is now available for free download. “Simply Alex” features tracks like “I Will Protect,” “Lookin’ For My Notebook,” “Never Give Up,” and “For The Love Of Mama.”
“Simply Alex” is Alex’s first mixtape release, chronicling his life experiences in love and in the streets. His goal with his music is to change the face of current hip hop—to bring it back around to its original form of storytelling. Using his faith in God and his desire to empower his listeners with his music, Alex hopes that he can show people that there is always the possibility for a better tomorrow, which is the message on the track “Never Give Up.” Alex recorded a video for the single “Shine,” which is available to view on YouTube.
Alex has recorded a number of tracks that have not yet been released—many of which follow a similar path and message as he presents on “Simply Alex.” As most artists do, Alex is constantly evolving and honing his craft. His next single release will be either a remix of “Ain’t No Sunshine” or “What Comes Last”—a song that reminds us that life is short, told through the stories of people who are taking life for granted. Alex will also be shooting a video for the last single featured on “Simply Alex,” entitled “Can You Hear Me.”
Alex was born James Alexander Campbell II on October 1, 1986 to Chester and Beverly Ann Campbell. Born into a military lifestyle, Alex knew from a young age that average was not his destiny. Moving from Jamaica to Germany, the six-member family settled into the place he now calls home, Cooperas Cove, TX.
In Texas he received his first taste of the spotlight, starring in musical theatre remakes; his 6th grade solo debut in Grease fueled his need to be center stage. His passion and talent for music was now undeniable, but only close friends and family were exposed to his true skill—rapping and battling. Never pushed into pursuing this, he dove into a beloved Texas pastime, football. Football became his focus until his freshman year of high school. Then the family made the decision to move to Florida. Once there, Alex’s interest in football faded. Though still battling and rapping, nothing seemed to hold him long and he soon turned to find ways to make money and be successful.
Then at 17, his grandfather passed away and Alex knew he had to show the world he had more potential than your average blue-collar worker and went to search for what would make him notorious. Dabbling in everything, he returned to a past love; his guitar. Picking it up, he would travel anywhere and play. At the beach he met a man who played army tracks and inspired him to freestyle. At that moment he knew that was the feeling he was searching for. Pushed by the norms and expectations of society, though he enlisted into the army, which has been his occupation since ’06. The feeling and need to tell his story through music is still there, however, and he is now motivated by the blessing of two beautiful little girls.
