Former college football player and coach aims to bring new football gaming idea to fans with the help of crowd-sourcing website Kickstarter.

What’s great about Kickstarter is that start-ups are able to generate funding above their own resources to be better prepared to approach venture capitalists.

CyberPlayer Football (http://www.cyberplayergames.com/), a small three-person Kalamazoo, MI startup is turning to online fundraising site Kickstarter.com to fund their businesses (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/748037444/cyberplayer-football?ref=live). Kickstarter is an online threshold pledge system for funding creative projects including art, design, publishing and technology among others. Every Kickstarter project has a funding goal, a deadline and rewards in exchange of pledge for project supporters termed “backers”. CyberPlayer Football launched its Kickstarter campaign on March 18 looking to raise $20,000 to fund the online football game.

“What’s great about Kickstarter is that start-ups are able to generate funding above their own resources to be better prepared to approach venture capitalists.” said Paul DeVries, founder of CyberPlayerGames. “It’s a win-win for both creators and investors interested in backing unique and exciting projects that were unlikely to make it to market in the past.”

CyberPlayer Football was conceived by DeVries, a former Western Michigan University football player and coach who has a passion for the sport. The football game is about the athlete and what it takes to make a great football player. The game is unique in that it allows players to train their athletes either virtually, through real-life geo-location check-in or both. The game parallels real life with virtual players earning college scholarships, being drafted and playing professional football and earning virtual money to spend on homes, cars and other luxury items.

Unlike traditional football video games for systems or fantasy football games, the player’s efforts determine the success or failure of the player’s athlete. The game also allows for social interaction with other players so they can share gaming techniques, compare game statistics or brag about gaming accomplishments.

"We wanted to create a game so fans can experience the life of an athlete," said DeVries. "If they play well enough, they can reap the rewards of a star athlete. But if they play the game poorly, their athlete will suffer the consequences."

CyberPlayer Football has until May 17 to reach their funding goal. The goal must be achieved to receive the monies pledged. Should the goal be surpassed, CyberPlayer Football would receive all funds.

Kickstarter launched in April 2010 and generated $27,638.18 dollars to 3,910 successful projects. In 2011, Kickstarter’s appeal grew substantially and successfully funded 11,836 projects totaling
$99,344,382 in funds (http://www.kickstarter.com/blog/2011-the-stats).
