National Railway Equipment Company (NREC), the world’s largest independently owned manufacturer and remanufacturer of locomotives and products worldwide, turned to TigerStop, LLC to provide solutions to their manufacturing challenges.
Faced with rising manufacturing costs and lost production dollars, National Railway had to rethink their operating strategies and focus on developing lean manufacturing processes. They experienced lost productivity, material waste, costly mistakes by manual processes which resulted in disassembling an entire cab to correct inaccurate tubing and angle iron lengths. The time it takes to measure each piece by hand, move and clamp them down, and mark and set each piece is a repeated step that significantly decreased production time. Operators use high-powered cold saws to cut materials and continuously put their hands near the blade while using their tape measure to process parts. The constant interaction with the blade is a top safety concern. National Railway was simply fed up, and turned to TigerStop for their solution. “Product quality is a big deal to us, and peoples’ lives are at stake. We needed to integrate an automated system into our manufacturing plant to improve safety and increase our production time,” stated Scott Beal, General Manager, National Railway. “We knew of TigerStop’s solid reputation and products, so we contacted them for a solution.”
The TigerRack is TigerStop’s newest precision rack and pinion driven linear positioner ideal for individual work stations or fully automated multi-line factories. It quickly and easily attaches to any machine tool including cold and band saws, iron workers, punches and brakes. TigerRack was the perfect solution for National Railway providing an automated, safe and easy-to-use process. Operators simply enter a dimension into the keypad and hit “Start.” The TigerRack positioner will move to within 0.008” of the entered dimension for precise cutting every time. Brent McGowen, Corporate Safety Director, National Railway explained; “The TigerRack has made our cutting operations four times faster opposed to cutting materials manually. It simply does the work for us, and it has dramatically improved the safety and accuracy in our plant. No more mistakes, no more worrying about hands getting too close to the blade; we’ve decreased our waste and produce the best possible product at the least amount of cost and time. TigerRack allows us to pass along those savings to our customers. The cost-saving advantages have been substantial and the pay-off period on the machine was within six months.” Scott Beal, General Manager, National Railway affirmed; “Our decision to integrate TigerRack into our plant was a no-brainer. I can have a less-skilled man actually run the saw, mark the part number from the cut list as it comes off, feed the material in and watch it go. I love it; that’s the kind of thing I like! It doesn’t call in sick, it doesn’t complain. That’s a wonderful thing.”
