Buying high-end clothes isn’t something you’d want to do online, but that doesn’t preclude apps from helping people find where to shop in real life.

MapMuse today announced the release of Couture Companion, an app for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch that takes the guesswork out of high fashion shopping by connecting users with stores carrying their favorite brands. The retail locations of 27 brands are tracked through the app, from tiny label boutiques to behemoth department stores.

“Buying high-end clothes isn’t something you’d want to do online, but that doesn’t preclude apps from helping people find where to shop in real life,” says Mike Pilon, owner of MapMuse. The first app of its kind in North America, Couture Companion is a map-based directory of stores carrying labels from famous designers—including Alexander McQueen, Chanel, D&G, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jobs, YSL, and Zegna. Single brand boutiques, specialty fashion shops, and major department stores such as Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue are included in the app’s database, which can be browsed by either toggling brands on/off to make them appear/disappear from the map, or by viewing all nearby high fashion stores. Once a user has identified a store that carries the label they're looking for, they can call ahead with on-touch dialing to confirm, get instant driving directions via GPS, view photos of the store, or check what other labels they carry.

Although MapMuse has gone to great lengths to ensure the accuracy of its listings, often procuring retail locations directly from the websites of the brands themselves, users are encouraged to submit new label sightings and stores directly from their mobile device. “The more active the user base, the more accurate the listings,” says Pilon. “We’re hoping to engage the fashion community here.” Users can also suggest that stores be removed from the map as their inventory changes, as well as submit reviews and photos of the places they visit. “Couture Companion is just as much a review platform as it is a directory,” says Pilon.

Couture Companion retails for $2.99 on the iTunes App Store. Although MapMuse is planning to release a Droid version sometime this year, non-Apple fashion addicts can tide themselves over with the High Fashion locator, a free internet version of the app with slightly reduced functionality.

MapMuse, an internet and app development company based in Reston, Virginia, has been developing locator maps for the web and the mobile markets for over a decade. They’ve has made it their goal to provide the general public with maps of any topic that can be geographically plotted, and their website is filled with thousands of locators for a wide range of brands and interests.
