Christopher Yanov founder of Reality Changers continues to create a new reality for at-risk youth to be able to achieve & enter college. He began the Reality Changers’ program 12 years ago in response to the lack of programs to support at-risk youth to learn what they can do as students versus what that can’t and shouldn’t do. "Most inner-city teenagers knew more people that have been shot or killed than people who were on the road to college," states Christopher Yanov, Founder, Reality Changers.
With only $300 and four eighth-graders in a Hispanic Presbyterian Church nearby downtown San Diego, Reality Changers has grown to offer leadership training, academic & financial support to hundreds of at-risk youth, at four sites that include a headquarters office in City Heights, a north county office in Solana Beach and student participation from 40 different high schools throughout San Diego County. Their greatest achievement, becoming California’s leading tutoring program for scholarships since June 2009 & obtaining millions of dollars in scholarships to colleges across the country.
Due to the expansion of services the Class of 2012 will have nearly as many graduates since its inception. On May 20th, 100 Reality Changers’ students will be honored in the region’s largest celebration of first generation college students at the University of San Diego’s Jenny Craig Pavilion. “If we truly want to cleanse the generations of gang-related bloodshed spilled onto our sidewalks, then we must flood our inner-city streets with options and opportunities so that urban youth can become caught up in the rising current of high expectations, newfound leadership, and previously unimaginable realities.”- Christopher Yanov, Founder, Reality Changers
