Backgrounds Online, today announced that the company has completed the US-European Union Safe Harbor self-certification process. This allows the company the ability to comply with European privacy laws and safely meet necessary requirements for business transactions with countries in the European Union, thus facilitating more comprehensive background checks regardless of which country a candidate calls home.

What Safe Harbor Certification Means To The Background Check Process
In 1998 the European Commission (EC) approved the Directive on Data Protection. This mandate prohibited the release of personal data about European citizens to non-European countries. The goal was to prevent countries that do not adhere to Europe's advanced privacy policies from receiving private data.

Following the release of this Directive, the EC cooperated with the U.S. Department of Commerce to develop a process that would allow the transfer of personal data to authorized American businesses. The result was Safe Harbor, a program that businesses could choose to complete in order to become eligible for receiving data on European citizens.

Backgrounds Online successfully completed the Safe Harbor certification process, which means the company adheres to the principles set forth by the agreement. This results in more secure background screening on an international level.

Backgrounds Online Voluntary Certification Process
Safe Harbor's certification process is not mandatory. Businesses may choose to undergo the certification process to demonstrate that they follow the same uncompromising privacy guidelines as the European Union.

“The European Union follows a steadfast set of standards when it comes to the transfer of personal data,” said Christopher Ballas, CEO of Backgrounds Online. “At Backgrounds Online we’ve always been dedicated to protecting every individual's private information. We took it upon ourselves to surmount the Safe Harbor certification process as an assurance of our commitment to personal privacy throughout the background check process.”

Backgrounds Online Commitment To Personal Privacy
Backgrounds Online has always been committed to protecting the privacy of individuals and businesses. According to CEO Christopher Ballas, voluntarily submitting to the Safe Harbor certification process was a logical and positive step.

Personal privacy has become a hot issue in our online society. Large amounts of information are readily available for most every person in the world. There are, however, limits to how much data people are willing to share via the Internet. Backgrounds Online is dedicated to demonstrating that the company believes in and adheres to the same elevated privacy guidelines as the European Commission.
