Yaz, Yasmin and similar contraceptives are made with a fourth-generation synthetic progestin called drospirenone. In December 2011, a panel of FDA advisors voted 21-5 to recommend that labels for Yaz, Yasmin and similar pills be updated with stronger warnings about their possible potential to cause serious, life threatening blood clots. In a much closer vote (15 to 11), the advisors recommended that Yaz and Yasmin should remain on the market. In its April 10 Drug Safety Communication, the FDA said the new label will state that some epidemiologic studies reported as much as a three-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for drospirenone birth control pills when compared to products containing levonorgestrel or some other progestins, whereas other epidemiological studies found no additional risk of blood clots with drospirenone-containing products. The labels also will include a summary of an FDA-funded study of the blood clot risk, which was released last fall. That study suggested an approximately 1.5-fold increase in the risk of blood clots for women who use drospirenone-containing birth control pills compared to users of other hormonal contraceptives. In addition to Yaz and Yasmin, the new information will be added to other drospirenone-containing birth control pills, including Beyaz, Gianvi, Loryna, Ocella, Safyral, Syeda, and Zarah, as well as generic versions.
