Bridge the gap between on-air and on-line experience to create a cohesive, interactive experience for audiences

“From a broadcast perspective, social media is an on-air and on-line experience that should be interactive and seamless,” said Larry Mincer, president of VDS.

Pixel Power Inc., (NAB Booth N2034) the leading innovator and supplier of broadcast playout solutions with integrated graphics, and VDS, (NAB Booth N3734) a leading developer of broadcast automation software, content design and plug-in products, announced today that the companies are collaborating to bridge the gap between traditional broadcast and the multi-screen viewing experience.

“From a broadcast perspective, social media is an on-air and on-line experience that should be interactive and seamless,” said Larry Mincer, president of VDS. “Delivering this requires the real-time automated graphics capability of Pixel Power systems coupled with the moderation, approval and control features of SoapBox from VDS. The combination allows media companies to connect directly with their viewers and creates new opportunities for their advertisers.”

“The combination of VDS Soapbox and Pixel Power graphics systems enables broadcasters to erase the line between their online community of viewers and the output delivered on air,” said Pixel Power Inc. CEO Pete Challinger. “Thanks to VDS, broadcasters can effectively engage with their viewers without sacrificing the control they need, while Pixel Power graphics ensure delivery of dynamic content to air. It is a perfect combination for developing new revenue opportunities and strengthening viewer loyalty.”

VDS SoapBox makes social media easy, providing all the tools to moderate and display Twitter and other social media messages during the on-air broadcast. SoapBox sorts Twitter messages by #Hash-tag to track specific topics and to conduct “ad-hoc” polling, or by @Mentions to track what viewers are saying about posts made from the specified Twitter account. SoapBox can also harvest from groups of Twitter accounts contained in “lists”, allowing end users to track tweets by specific on-air talent, specific celebrities, specific “super fans”, etc. Using available and/or custom add-on modules, Soapbox can support other data sources including SMS data aggregators, specialized XML data feeds, and pre-defined messages stored in ASCII text files.

Pixel Power offers a range of broadcast graphics and integrated playout systems that deliver the speed and layering capability needed to make the on-air social media experience truly interactive, displaying messages and posts from social media sites quickly as the program progresses. Pixel Power systems including Clarity graphics systems, Logovision automated branding devices and BrandMaster master control switchers enable unified social media workflows via an XML interface that exposes the full power of the systems. This allows Soapbox to take complete advantage of the broadcast graphics environment.
