This year, the annual London Marathon will take place on 22nd April 2012 and thousands of runners will be running 26 mile across London for some extremely worthwhile causes.

The 2012 Virgin London Marathon, which will take place on Sunday 22 April, is one of the biggest running events in the world, and one of the top five marathons. With three separate starting points, the race finishes with the final mile along the Embankment, with spectacular views of the London Eye and Big Ben, and the finish line stands opposite St James’s Palace near Hyde Park Corner. Millennium & Copthorne Hotels operates six hotels in the capital, including hotels near Hyde Park, which offer both participants and supporters the perfect place to spend the weekend.

The final section of this year’s route will form part of the London 2012 Olympics marathon course, making 2012 an iconic year to run the marathon. For younger people keen to be part of the 2012 Virgin London Marathon, the final three miles of the route welcome 11-17 year olds to take part in the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon.

Celebrities taking part in the London Marathon this year include celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, model and presenter Nell McAndrew, Olympic gold medallist and adventurer James Cracknell and singer Will Young. Millions of pounds will be raised for many different charities, both large and small, and London will be buzzing with the excitement of the event.

Many runners take part in the marathon in fancy dress, with costumes ranging from Superman to Tinker Bell. In 2011, a 43 year old runner dressed as Fred Flintstone became the fastest competing cartoon character, finishing the course in less than three hours. In 2010, Richard Branson, his son and daughter, and six other celebrities ran the race tied together by rope, and went by the name ‘Team Caterpillar’. With thousands taking part and an electric atmosphere, this year’s London Marathon will be an iconic, unmissable event.
