Senior housing hub SeniorLivingSolutions.com has unveiled a new checklist to help seniors and families decide on the best housing option for them. The checklist is aimed at those sifting through potential senior living facilities in the Bay Area.
Site founder Michael MacDonald notes that the checklist was created in order to help families focus on the things that make the largest impact in a senior living facility. MacDonald adds that: “As the head of Carlton Senior Living, I receive dozens of families every month. While most of the questions they ask are logical, I’m always surprised at how few ask about the things that really make or break a senior living facility such as ours. My hope is that families use the checklist to set their crosshairs on the factors that will make the biggest difference in their senior family member’s experience.”
What items are included in the checklist? The first few points on the checklist cover the question that burns on many families minds’: payment and billing. Because assisted living facilities can be pricey, the checklist advises families to see whether the long-term care facility in question is covered by Medicare or Medicare. However, the checklist warns that most long-term care is not typically covered by insurance and must be paid out of pocket. The checklist also touches on the factors that contribute to the varying levels of cost, including level of care, size of the apartment and amenities.
MacDonald adds that veterans and other service members may qualify for long-term care payment benefits. According to MacDonald, this is something not often asked by families and has the potential to save them thousands of dollars of the term of the individual’s stay.
