10Rate appliances editor Brittany Rowland, as well as other 10rate reviewers and staff, selected 10 of the best cookware sets for 2012, assigning each a numerical rating as well as awarding three sets that stood out for quality, value, and budget. Testing and consideration for this Cookware Sets Top 10 list were given based on this set of nine criteria:

1. Ease of cleaning—either dishwasher safe or easy to wash by hand with little sticking
2. Even and fast heating with no hotspots
3. Durable, sturdy construction
4. Easy-grip handles that stay cool to the touch
5. Good value for the price
6. A comprehensive mix of saucepans, pots, skillets, and other assorted tools
7. Safe to bake in the oven
8. No warping or staining
9. Tight-fitting lids

The annual Best Cookware Set 2012 awards list was headed by the Cuisinart 77-10 10-Piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set, winning the Best Quality spot and a near flawless 9.5 out of 10 rating. The review noted several strengths of the cookware set as follows: “The riveted handles are built for stability; they’re easy to grip, balanced, and stay cool to the touch. The aluminum bases heat up quickly with just a low heat setting and distribute heat evenly. The lids, while slightly lightweight, seal in the heat, flavor, and texture of the food. At $108.99, this set provides an excellent value, given how hefty and solid they feel.”

10rate's editors also gave the Best Value Cookware Set award to the Farberware 71238 17-Piece Stainless Steel Cookware Set. With a rating of 9 out of 10, the review boasted, “This 17-piece set for only $114.54 includes 3 saucepans, 2 saucepots, 2 skillets, 3 nesting bowls, a cooking sheet, and a cake pan. The stainless steel surfaces are durable, don’t warp, and are easy to clean in the dishwasher. The tight-fitting lids are interchangeable and create a nice seal on the pots and pans. You can safely place the items in a 350-degree oven.”

Additionally, the Best Budget award from the Top 10 Best Cookware list went to the Cook N Home NC-00296 15-Piece Non-stick Aluminum Cookware Set, for which Rowland noted, “For a relatively inexpensive cookware set at $67.04, these aluminum pots and pans are sturdy and good quality. Their non-stick surfaces make cleanup easy, and the aluminum material distributes heat quickly and evenly. It’s also nice to get an assortment of kitchen tools — a spatula, pasta spoon, and various ladles — in heavy-duty plastic.”

Cuisinart and T-Fal were both featured for multiple sets each in 10rate's Cookware Reviews. Though only featured for one set,Paula Deen Cookware was also featured on 10rate's list this year. With a respectable rating of 7.5 out of 10, the review stated, “An attractive assortment of pots and pans with speckled porcelain exteriors, this Paula Deen cookware set includes 3 lidded saucepans, 2 skillets, and a stockpot. The tempered glass lids fit tightly in place and lock in flavors and moisture. We liked the rubberized handles for their sturdiness and coolness; they also have rings in case you want to hang them from a pot rack.”
