Marilu Rios Kernan, Chief Marketing Officer and Co-Founder of College Admissions Assistance, joined other members of the One Community One Goal (OCOG) Steering Committee in the latest of a series of workshops designed to gather input for Miami’s strategic-industry growth plan. The OCOG plan is built on the belief that education is the foundation for economic growth. The purpose of the OCOG plan is to create a plan of action for growing jobs and investment in Miami-Dade County.

The most recent workshop served as the formal release of the OCOG Report 3: Education Asset Inventory that identifies the skills, education, and training assets in the Miami education ecosystem. No other community has produced this type of comprehensive report in a process that involves all educational entities and levels. For the full report go to http://beaconcouncilfoundation.org/2012/03/20/ocog-education-assets-inventory-report-3/.

The workshop also served as an opportunity for the Steering Committee to provide specific strategies in five different areas: Business Climate & Policy, Education & Workforce, Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Physical Infrastructure and Economic Development Marketing. Ms. Kernan, along with Florida International University’s Dr. Mark Rosenberg, Barry University President Sister Bevilacqua, Dr. Millie Fornell, Miami Dade County School Associate Superintendent Curriculum, and others, offered specific strategies to improve and augment the working relationships between the business community and the education community. “Miami has an inspiring, entrepreneurial ’can do’ spirit. Educational institutions involved in the OCOG Steering Committee are developing creative ways to involve and attract the business community. Everyone is excited about our OCOG strategic plan, but nobody is sitting around waiting for a formal report,” commented Ms. Kernan.

The strategies generated by the Steering Committee workshop along with strategies provided by the other workgroups, input collected from the OCOG survey, focus groups, and other community events will be presented to the public in a cohesive plan on May 7th at Miami Dade College’s downtown campus.
