When someone told author Petite Belle Hammonds that she shouldn’t take the story of her birth to the grave and that she should write about it, Hammonds took it to heart. It was this moment she decided to write the story of her premature birth and miraculous survival, a story told in her new book “Petite Belle: How I Got My Name” (published by AuthorHouse).
“My name is Petite Belle,” she says. “‘How I Got My Name’ is a non-fiction account of the first five months of my life. I weighed less than 400 grams. I will take you on a day-to-day journey of my survival. I survived with almost no medical issues.”
Hammonds also notes how important her physician was in her life. “If there wasn’t a Dr. Walter R. Wiley, there wouldn’t be a Petite Belle,” she says. “He was indeed a healer.”
An excerpt from “How I Got My Name”:
This was post WWII. Right after the war. Dr. Wiley used my parent’s wood burning kitchen stove as my incubator. Our kitchen stove had an upper compartment called the warmer. The most important task to achieve for premature babies is to keep them warm. They must be kept warm. I have a vivid memory of our wood burning cooking stoves. I remember going with my oldest sisters to pick up wood for the stove. We had wood burning stoves for warming the house also.
“Incubators at the time were not yet invented,” explains Belle.
“How I Got My Name” is the incredible story of how Petite Belle survived her birth weighing less than a pound.
