Judging from the thousands of kitten videos gaining thousands of views on YouTube, it is clear that people love pets. But pet ownership is a serious responsibility requiring an investment of time and money. According to the American Pet Products Association, Americans spent over $50 million on their pets in 2011. Hoping to help young readers learn about the responsibilities that come along with owning a pet, Marilyn Toliver delivers “Marcellus Really Wants A Pet” (published by Trafford Publishing), her new children’s storybook.

In “Marcellus Really Wants A Pet,” a little boy – Marcellus – has been asking his grandmother if he could have a pet, and she finally agrees. He is delighted when, after considering the cost, time and responsibilities of owning a pet, his grandmother brings home a beautiful pet parakeet.

Marcellus loves his new pet, its beautiful colors and its pleasant song. But after the bird has been in his house for some time, a bit of reality sets in. Marcellus must carefully tend to the bird’s needs, giving it food and water and keeping its enclosure clean.

Pictures and rhyming lines help readers learn about all the steps involved in caring for a bird, finding out how these things keep the pet and the pet owner happy and healthy.

“If you want a pet you must be willing to take care of it,” says Toliver. “Be like Marcellus who did his part cheerfully.”
