Dodson has joined the firm as a partner. Mr. Dodson, one of the nation’s premier intellectual property litigators, specializes in patent cases involving biotechnology, hardware, software and chemistry.

Jerry is most widely recognized for his role as lead trial and appellate attorney representing The Regents of the University of California in a landmark patent suit against Genentech involving pioneering patents covering human growth hormone in the DNA field (No. C-90-2322, N.D. Cal. 1990). The case made national and international news when it was tried by a jury in San Francisco and settled for $200 million. Jerry also won the Aukerman v. Chaides case en banc before the Federal Circuit, which is the seminal case on laches in the patent law field. 960 F.2d 1020 (Fed. Cir. 1992) (en banc).

Jerry Dodson said that he “was attracted by the core litigation, patent prosecution, trademark and corporate practices at Carr & Ferrell that are led by a very talented and successful group of partners.” He added that he also liked the business model and size of the firm that he thought “best fits the current business climate in Silicon Valley that requires delivery of high quality legal services at competitive prices.” Prior to going into private practice, Jerry was Chief Counsel for the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Health and Environment in the United States House of Representatives involved in drafting major health and environmental laws including the Clean Air Act, Safe Drinking Water Act and Hatch-Waxman Act. He also headed up the congressional investigation of the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal, India.

Jerry has been named to “The Best Lawyers in America” list in 2011 and 2012 for his work in patent litigation and has been recognized in “Northern California Super Lawyers” since 2004. He has also been repeatedly recognized by Chambers and Partners in their Global and USA lists of “The World’s Leading Lawyers for Business” which noted in their 2010 edition that he is “a leading light in life sciences-related patent litigation, although this versatile litigator also has a sterling track record in trials relating to the consumer products and high-tech sectors.”
