Destination ImagiNation is an extraordinary non-profit organization that provides educational programs for students to learn and experience creativity, teamwork and problem solving. It is an exhilarating after-school activity in which students work in teams to solve mind-bending Challenges and present their solutions at Tournaments.

It is amazing that a team in their first year has come up with a solution that takes them all the way to Global Finals!

Coyote Ridge Elementary; Team “Nerdz” won 1st Place in the Solar Stage Challenge at the Regional Competition February 25 at R.L. Turner High School to qualify for the state tournament. The “Nerdz” were also awarded the Renaissance Award and the prestigious DaVinci Award. After competing at the State Tournament in Corpus Christi April 14th, the “Nerdz” Team placed 4th in their category to advance to Global Finals. Over 20 first place teams from across Texas competed in the elementary (B) category and only the top four teams are invited to compete at Global Finals.

The Solar Stage (B) category requires the students to utilize creativity and teamwork to complete the task of demonstrating how solar energy is used in a new way. The students present their skit while showcasing student-made props and costumes to demonstrate their solution within an eight-minute timeline.

Months of preparation have been committed to make the Nerdz Team a success. The team has been practicing twice a week for hours at a time since early in the 2011-2012 school year. The team is very excited and honored to represent Coyote Ridge Elementary and L.I.S.D among the very best in the world.

The team members include Lauren Chambers, Tiana Hammock, Kristopher Hughes, Thalia Hughes, Olivia Martin, Austin Nguyen and Lindsey Peterson. The team is managed by Mackenzie Kinsella and assisted by Amy Mackintosh and Terri Kinsella.

The team’s goal is to raise about $10,000 to pay for tournament fees and travel expenses.
The finals will be held May 23 through 26 in Knoxville at the University of Tennessee.
