To curb skyrocketing crime and drug trade in the small community of Georgetown South in Manassas City, VA leaders from the local HOA teamed up with the video security company, smartisight and strategically mounted security cameras around their neighborhood. Due to insufficient funding, however, the program was scrapped and the cameras were removed last month.

The cameras were installed last February and ran for 24 hours. 'These cameras don't need to be actively watched all the time', says Jo Ann Niswander, business manager with smartisight. 'They have best-in-class motion sensors and incredible optics. Captured video footage is password-protected and can be viewed from anywhere, anytime'.

The local police chief was given access to these cameras, and to the videos that were stored. Unfortunately, the cameras had to be removed before enough evidence could be collected. The decision was reached in a recent board meeting when they could not come up with the funds to permanently acquire the cameras. smartisight had donated equipment, installation and service on a trial basis. Similar systems have successfully helped arrest scores of offenders in Pittsburgh, PA.

With the entire nation still reeling from the Trayvon Martin tragedy, a lot of attention is being directed at neighborhoods and community-led foot patrols. ‘What happened there is exactly why people need to change the whole way neighborhood watch is implemented’ says Jo Ann Niswander. 'For about $300 per month per camera, the cost can easily be absorbed by residents in the form of a local tax. This translates to less than a dollar per month per resident.' Melanie Duran, smartisight's CFO, agrees: 'When paying a dollar a month can bring the children back to the playgrounds, you must be crazy not to move forward with this. How the board voted the plan down is beyond me. But I'm optimistic they will change their minds.' smartisight's company slogan echoes that thought: I once was blind, but now I see.
