Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery (CHRIAS) Surgeons Receive 2011 Top Doc Award

Delaware Today magazine has announced that three leading surgeons at Christiana Institute of Advanced Surgery (CHRIAS) of Newark, DE have been recognized as Top Doc award winners in 2011. The award is presented each year, and fellow doctors nominate the recipients. This is not the first award received by the Institute, which has already been appointed as a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence by the ASMBS (American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) and the ACS (American College of Surgeons) in recognition of outstanding achievements and a steady record of exceptional outcomes in weight loss surgery.

Meet the three CHRIAS Awardees: the lead surgeons and co-founders of CHRIAS

•     Isaias Irgau, M.D., FACS, FRCS (Ed), President

Dr. Irgau, an author of many publications and a board certified general surgeon is an expert at minimally invasive bariatric surgery. In cooperation with Dr. Gail Wynn, he was the pioneer of the LAP-BAND® procedure in Delaware. He has completed over 2,000 successful bariatric procedures. Dr. Irgau graduated from Bristol University Medical School in England. He also holds a dual fellowship with Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and the American College of Surgeons.

•     Gail M. Wynn M.D., FACS

Dr. Wynn is a board certified general surgeon who specializes in bariatric surgery and advanced laparoscopic procedures. Besides being a cofounder of CHRIAS, she works as the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at St. Francis Hospital. Her professional record includes over 2,000 weight loss surgeries as well as numerous publications. Dr. Wynn has previously been recognized as one of state’s “Top Surgeons” by Delaware Today magazine. She graduated with honors from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine after which she took a surgical training at the Medical Center of Delaware.

•     Michael Peters Jr., M.D., FACS

Dr. Peters, the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery for CHRIAS, is a board certified general surgeon who received fellowship training in advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgical procedures. He was the first surgeon to perform a sleeve gastrectomy in Delaware. His qualifications include a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College followed by surgery training at the Pinnacle Health Hospitals in Pennsylvania in 2003. Dr. Peters also completed a fellowship in advanced laparoscopy and weight loss surgery at the Michael DeBakey Surgery Center of Excellence at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX.
