After surveying 300 physicians, caregivers and hospital administrators in early 2012 regarding the future of primary care in their organizations, the company released an executive summary highlighting the main areas of importance to them.
Conducted by an outside research firm, the survey found that healthcare professionals are deeply concerned about managing the needs of an evolving group of patients while also managing costs and the intricacies of a changing delivery of care.
“In recent years, an increasingly complex patient population, coupled with a wide array of technologic advancements and changing legislation, has forced a number of major changes for those working in primary care. This is bound to be difficult for an industry that must consider so many regulations and details for each decision,” said Jon Wells, Director of Marketing at Midmark. “Midmark has served the healthcare industry and particularly primary care facilities for more than 45 years. The top three themes of the survey were:
- Looking ahead – Standardizing processes and integrating software that can improve efficiency is key to providing quality care in the future. Of the respondents, 62 percent of physicians, and 76 percent of caregivers and administrators, would like to standardize many of the primary care processes in their offices in the next three years. It is typical, even in the most forward-thinking organizations, for process in primary care offices to vary greatly.
- Money matters – Not surprising, budget issues affect every decision. Nearly three in five (58 percent) physicians believe that the healthcare industry most needs to improve cost of care, and almost half of caregivers (49 percent) named lack of funds as their biggest hurdle in providing optimal patient care.
- Improving efficiency – A majority (63 percent) of physicians say that increased electronic medical record access and data retrieval is the most important enhancement for exam rooms. More than half (53 percent) of the administrators surveyed agreed.
