SpinLife.com, the largest U.S. direct-to-consumer Internet retailer of durable medical equipment, awarded its 2011 annual Innovation in Motion Scholarship to Nathan Watt, a Capital University student who is studying music. Watt will finish his sophomore year in a few weeks after studying choir, jazz and music technology; an extensive course load that Watt says he couldn’t afford without the SpinLife.com scholarship.
Nathan, born with Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus and Chiari Malformation, was selected based on his essay themed around overcoming obstacles and living each day to the fullest. He also included the lyrics to a song he wrote entitled, “Unstoppable.”
“I have had 47 operations and a multitude of infections that kept me in the hospital for about one third of my life,” he wrote. “I chose very early on to live the other two-thirds with as much gusto as possible.”
SpinLife.com provides one $500 Innovation in Motion Scholarship to students who are manual or power wheelchair users enrolled at an accredited four-year institution. In the next few weeks, SpinLife will announce the theme of its 2012 Innovation in Motion Scholarship and begin accepting applications on line. “Nathan exemplifies the power and beauty of the human spirit,” said Lisa Stein, CEO of SpinLife.com. “He is a true inspiration to us all. We are honored and proud to help him explore his love of music at a higher academic level and we are pleased this scholarship is helping him do just that.”
Nathan, 18, has accomplished much in his young life. By second grade, he wrote the book, “Anything is Possible (Even with Spina Bifida)”. His song Unstoppable was the theme song for the 2010 World Conference on Drug Prevention in Louisville, Kentucky.
Upon graduation, Nathan plans to move to Nashville and pursue a career in the music industry. His advice to those who are considering applying for this year’s SpinLife.com scholarship. “Just do it. There is nothing to lose and you can only gain something by sending in an application. For me it was definitely well worth it.”
