SOFA has been providing financial literacy workshops in the East Bay, and Nationwide for companies, churches and organizations since 1993. SOFA has helped 1,000’s of people in over 48 states become more financially secure. SOFA has presented at: Disney, NASA, the F.B.I., Intuit, SONY, the U.S. Mint, City and County Governments and many more.

Financial literacy is absolutely crucial in today’s economic environment. Not only are we facing a down economy, but individuals and their families have to navigate an increasingly complex financial system. I am working with SOFA to help our residents.

Mayor Tom Bates, on behalf of the City of Berkeley, proclaimed April as Financial Literacy Month and encouraged everyone to take this time to learn how to budget, plan for their retirement, learn their financial rights or teach them to someone they care about.

Councilman Darryl Moore, of the Berkeley City Council, commented, “Financial literacy is absolutely crucial in today’s economic environment. Not only are we facing a down economy, but individuals and their families have to navigate an increasingly complex financial system where they can easily be set adrift. I am working with the Society for Financial Awareness (SOFA) to help educate our residents so they are better equipped to ensure their financial future.”

•Highlights included: Cathy Ongiri, the Legal Services Chair, of Charles Houston Bar Association who presented on individual’s legal rights regarding debt including how to obtain a free credit report, how to determine if the debts are valid, how to contest debts that are not valid or beyond the statute of limitations with sample letters handed out to all participants.
