In recent years, there has been a dramatic change in the way movie aficionados view their silver screen favorites. Instead of DVDs and Blu-ray discs, home movie buffs are opting for a much more convenient way to watch Hollywood hits -- online streaming.

The convenience and affordability offered by the web has likely precipitated this shift towards online streaming and, perhaps, paves the way for a new era in the way we receive and digest entertainment.

OnlineDegrees.com, a leading education site since 2003, recently launched “The Death of the DVD,” an infographic that highlights the shift to online movie streaming.

Although rentals and purchases of DVD and Blu-ray discs remain commonplace, these forms of delivery now compete with new technology that allows films to be delivered online in a matter of seconds. Since 2011, the number of movies watched online has grown 135 percent, from an estimated 1.45 billion to 3.4 billion.

“More movies are viewed online than via all other physical formats combined,” said Kevin Phang, spokesperson for OnlineDegrees.com. “The convenience and affordability offered by the web has likely precipitated this shift towards online streaming and, perhaps, paves the way for a new era in the way we receive and digest entertainment.”

Film fans can stream their favorites from several online distributors, including Netflix, Hulu and Amazon, and watch immediately or add to a playlist for later. This allows instant gratification and flexibility in viewing schedule may contribute to the appeal of online movie streaming. In addition, the cost of accessing a movie online is significantly lower than the cost of watching a movie using other formats, at an average of only 51 cents per viewing.

“The DVD may be obsolete soon,” continued Phang. “There is no reason to go out and purchase a physical recording when you can watch any movie you want, whenever you want, and cheaply, online.”
