The Radical and Unacceptable Nature of Real Forgiveness

A Course In Miracles International releases for download, archival live recording of discourse on forgiveness with the Master Teacher.

International Forgiveness Week 2001

Forgiveness recognizes that what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven.

As part of its forgiveness campaign in the run-up to International Forgiveness Week and Weekend of Perfect Peace (September 14 – 23, 2012), A Course In Miracles International today released for free online download, a live audio recording of a 1991 discourse with the Master Teacher, provocatively entitled “The Joyful Meaninglessness of Forgiving.”

The recording can be heard and or downloaded at:

“At first glance, the title of this talk may seem contradictory and inconsistent with our message of Peace through Forgiveness,” explained Teacher of God, Michael O'Connor, “but upon closer examination, the serious seeker will see immediately that his own previous understanding of forgiveness had no basis in Truth”. The apparent condition of man, circumscribed by space and time, locked in a sick and decaying flesh, experiencing everything as outside of him, and with no idea of who he is or how he got here; is completely false and does not exist. There is an experience of Reality that is far beyond anything the unenlightened human mind can remotely conceive of. That experience is what true forgiveness offers.

“As Jesus Christ says in A Course In Miracles, 'Forgiveness recognizes that what you thought your brother did to you has not occurred. It does not pardon sins and make them real. It sees there was no sin. And in that view are all your sins forgiven. What is sin, except a false idea about God’s Son? Forgiveness merely sees its falsity, and therefore lets it go. What then is free to take its place is now the Will of God.'

“As the idea of forgiveness continues to gain approbation in the mass media and web-based social networks, continued O'Connor, “it is important that we do not sacrifice the real meaning of a true divine experience at the altar of hype and sensationalism. This recording must be heard because it is an uncompromising declaration of Truth and can therefore elevate the consciousness beyond the apparent confines of space and time – the action of real forgiveness.”

In the audio recording, the Master Teacher, speaking to a supportive and wildly enthusiastic audience, outlines the principles of true forgiveness and demonstrates the method by which forgiveness can be experienced using lesson 134 of the workbook of A Course In Miracles, which says, “Let me perceive forgiveness as it is.”

The Lesson goes on to say, “Let us review the meaning of "forgive," for it is apt to be distorted and to be perceived as something that entails an unfair sacrifice of righteous wrath, a gift unjustified and undeserved, and a complete denial of the truth. In such a view, forgiveness must be seen as mere eccentric folly, and this course appear to rest salvation on a whim.

“This twisted view of what forgiveness means is easily corrected, when you can accept the fact that pardon is not asked for what is true. It must be limited to what is false. It is irrelevant to everything except illusions. Truth is God's creation, and to pardon that is meaningless. All truth belongs to Him, reflects His laws and radiates His Love. Does this need pardon? How can you forgive the sinless and eternally benign?

“The major difficulty that you find in genuine forgiveness on your part is that you still believe you must forgive the truth, and not illusions. You conceive of pardon as a vain attempt to look past what is there; to overlook the truth, in an unfounded effort to deceive yourself by making an illusion true. This twisted viewpoint but reflects the hold that the idea of sin retains as yet upon your mind, as you regard yourself.”
